Programs

Haley Street offers a range of options aimed at providing opportunities for people to improve their skill sets, moving them along the path of independence. These supports range from services that focus on small changes needed to secure employment, to personal care needs. All program participants are over 21 years of age and have a diagnosis that includes a developmental disability.

Skills Development Program

Through the use of a combination of visual aides and verbal feedback and prompts, people are encouraged to communicate in an appropriate manner. Through the use of domestic skills, the participant will be encouraged to take responsibility and learn new ways of contributing to their every day life. The goal of the program is to maintain the skill set of individuals while adding to their level of independence.

The program offers music therapy, art therapy, exercise, relaxation techniques, movie day, walks when weather permits, self-directed leisure activities and sign language. Domestic skills opportunities include laundry, folding clothes, baking, wiping tables, sweeping floors, preparing clothing for the Thrift Store, cleaning dishes and loading the dishwasher.

Each person has an individual schedule of activities that encourage people to grow and learn in a structured environment.

Personal Development Program

This program offers experience and training that provide skills that are transferrable to home and work. Through the use of domestic skills people are encouraged to take responsibility and learn new ways of contributing to their every day life. These skills are also valuable assets for transferrable work-related opportunities.

Domestic skills include: laundry, folding clothes, baking, wiping tables, sweeping floors, preparing clothing for the Thrift Store, cleaning dishes, loading the dishwasher, preparing meals, recycling lights, using the computer, shredding paper, recycling products and cutting rags.

Leisure and Self-Directed Activity

These programs are offered to participants so they may choose activities during leisure time. Programs offered include:

Music therapy, art therapy, exercise, relaxation techniques, movie day, walks when weather permits, self-directed leisure activities, sign language, daily community events reading, retail sales experience, cognitive tasks (reading and math), self-help skills such as shoe tying, using zippers, etc.

Life Skills Program

This program offers support and training that meets the complex needs of some individuals served at the Centre. Through augmented communication techniques, individuals learn appropriate ways to express themselves. Involvement in domestic tasks such as baking, meal preparation, dishes and laundry teach participants the value of responsibility.

Each participant is on an individual schedule that includes communication, leisure, sensory and relaxation time, cognitive tasks, music therapy, walking programs, hygiene programs and various domestic skills.

Woodworking/Vocational Department

This program provides valuable opportunities for participants to work at their own pace in the production department. This service provides opportunities for a fast-paced work environment with multiple layers of responsibility. Through task breakdown individuals are able to assist with the wood manufacturing program, including the production of survey stakes, kindling and palettes (these items are sold through the agency).

Participants work at their own pace with each step in the manufacturing process. Skills such as team-work, quality control and dealing with the general public are emphasized. These are essential skills for those wishing to have employment experiences at different locations.

Employment Options

Each participant who is interested is eligible to be in our employment program. This program provides the opportunity for employment options outside of the Centre.

Many participants have part-time jobs where they attend the Centre on a part-time basis. The Employment Program teaches the essential skills to succeed with employers, co workers and the general public.
